Active Civic Initiative

Local government, Citizen participation and civic activism, Conflict resolution and peacebuilding.

Establishing self-reliant youth ecosystems/movements/groups of active citizens in small cities of Georgia, who`ll be independently able to identify problems, search for solutions and cooperate/lobby with local authorities. My dream is to grassroot changes.

The problem we are trying to solve:

Because I believe that the only key to a better future is active, responsible, educated community - WE as a community need to know WHAT we want, WHY do we want it, HOW can we get there. "The problem affects first of all youngsters who could not get enough competencies but the whole society overall. Competencies and knowledge is the key to survival in the modern world. But we need more than just survival. We want to live and learn, create and improve, reach our goals and leave a better environment for our sons and daughters. The problem is the current gap in the community leaves us without the opportunity to do all abovementioned."

The solution we are proposing:

This will help us to create a common space/community building for youngsters who want to learn and improve themselves. We will have a space to conduct workshops and trainings. With the help of computers in there, our participants will have a possibility to gain digital skills, learn the basics of programming, graphic design etc. This will be the room for improvement. Everyone interested in the concept of "better me" could freely come and learn. It will grant young people with the opportunity to overcome the obstacles created by socio-economical problems of their families. This will open the doors to modern educational system, new professions, new hobbies etc. We`ve already identified the most active young people who can help us to run the common space. They will be the office-managers of the facility and help us to bring more and more young people into our project. We`ve already identified several buildings, where we can start our project. We`ve negotiating with local authorities to get any empty place possible. If we have funding, finalizing this negotiations will be a lot easier.

What success looks like for us:

Success - increased youth engagement into decision-making process on local level (quantity of petitions, assembly meetings, implemented projects); increased quantity of projects implemented by our beneficiaries; quantities of internships that our beneficiaries got after trainings; quantity of movements/organizations/communities formed based on our common space/platform.

Where we are are based:

Senaki, Georgia

Funding we are applying for:

$10,000 - $12,000 per year

How this funding will help us achieve our goals:

For the first year we need the funding to get computer equipment, projectors, create modern library, buy workshop materials, board-games and other types of entertaining-educational equipment. create conference hall and several learning rooms. After two years this space will have a concept of social enterprise. Youngsters will have possibility to use all the facility equipment for free, but we`re working on a concept of small cinema, that will help to have additional income to cover various expenses in the future.

How this funding will strengthen our group:

This funding will bring our organization to the next level. We will not have any limitations to organize and implement our projects or to invite speakers and volunteers to conduct their projects in our town. Our organization will welcome any other actor in this common space to serve the goals and values in which we believe. Funding will help us to have a physical platform for improvement and intense educational process.

How we gain by being a Spark Fund partner:

First of all the financial aid could help us to quickly implement what we`ve planned for years. Besides, networking with other organizations and participating in capacity development workshops would be great. We are ready for hard work, we are committed to reaching the goals and learning as much as possible - till the best versions of ourselves. We want to be improved in order to improve the environment.

How we would like to spend a grant through the Spark Fund:

We would like to use part of the money on infrastructure and equipment, while using other half on projects, lectures, educational/career courses (entrepreneurship courses for women, people with special needs, youth; programming; graphic design), seminars, public meetings, movie-screening & discussion. Also, for each quarter of year, we`ll have free funds that we`ll use for our beneficiaries` projects.

Our Annual Income:

1600 Euros

Our Organization Structure:

Decisions in the organization are made depending on who or what the decisions relate to. - This means that if the organization makes a decision about the project, then the representatives of the target group of the project also participate in the decision-making process. If this is directly related to the organization, its structure and internal affairs, then the members of the organization are involved in the decision-making process. The organization is promoting grassroots approach. We believe in democracy so the decisions are made based on the election. All of the members of the organization and even the speakers of our project are young people. We`re trying to contact young successful citizens and bring them into our projects as a role-models. Our experience shows that young people who want to learn and gain new skills are more engaged when the process is led by young speakers, which could be explained by the fact that they see less "distance" both in years/experience and through a mindset. This does not mean that we reject the expertise of previous generations. We`re trying to, on one hand, accumulate the knowledge with the help of everyone capable of, but, on the other hand, spread it with the help of youngsters.
